Using an ATM is an ordinary task. You walk up, withdraw some cash or deposit a check, and you’re on your way. However, in this day-and-age, criminals have become much more adept at accessing your account information and savings through underhanded technology schemes. Here are some of the ways to prevent yourself from becoming a victim of ATM thieves.
As always, be aware of your surroundings. If you spot an unknown individual lurking around an ATM, don’t use it! It’s better to be safe than sorry (and without your money!).
When entering a PIN, shield the screen and keyboard so those nearby can’t see. It’s a simple step that ensures others don’t learn your PIN or develop an idea of your transaction amounts.
Inspect the ATM for skimming devices and cameras before using your card. A quick scan for damaged or crooked pieces, extra attachments to the card slot, noticeable resistance when pressing the keypad, adhesive residue and recording devices could save your account information from being compromised.
Refrain from counting or displaying withdrawn money. Put it in your wallet, your purse or your pocket and double-check it when you are no longer in public. To ensure the accuracy of your withdrawal, be sure to snag your receipt as well! Taking your receipt also works to keep your account information private and secure.
